Have You Thought about Your Locks Lately?

Look at These Tips and Avoid Trouble

Locks function day in and day out with little and more often, no attention. Although you don’t see it there is a lot going on in that small device that you rely on for security each and every day.Having springs, pins or wafers and changing position each time you insert your key, the time may come when you either cannot insert the key or remove it. Not to mention the cylinder refusing to turn. And you can almost bet on it being cold, or dark, probably both.

security lockYour local grocery store carries small cans of WD40, a size that will fit into a car’s glove box. WD40 is a lubricant locksmiths often use. Like the big can, the small can comes with a red wand, or tube that fits the spray nozzle for lubricating internal mechanical parts. You can give a small squirt to the inside of what will be a grateful and long functioning lock. Remember to carry a tissue for over-spray. Once a month would be generous.

Truck caps and exterior car locks are most susceptible to lock failure. Truck cap locks can fail to the point of needing replacement in as little as one winter where there is snow, ice, and salt. These will need more frequent attention than most locks and can fail quickly, to the disappointment of sportsmen.

Pay attention to the added weight on your ignition key ring. As you drive, that additional weight; usually just too many keys, swings back and forth. This motion transmits to the ignition key in a corresponding rotation inside the ignition lock that can eventually cause it to fail.

Be sure to have the code numbers of your car keys, most importantly your ignition key. You can save yourself money and aggravation if part of your car purchase ritual is to store that information with your important documents. Your dealer probably can get that information. But if you have it you will be able to relieve what could be an already tense situation. The dilemma you do not want to face is one that you have to replace your ignition lock, car doors and trunk and glove box locks; because you cannot get the key codes that will produce new, working keys. Auto dealerships are closing at an alarming rate.
